Our employees have the opportunity to grow in their roles at UGL, while making a meaningful impact in the community.
Roy Johnson, Project Manager in our Industrials and Resources team, has exemplified this by advancing in his career at the same time as spearheading initiatives that give back to the community.
Roy’s career at UGL has spanned 11 years, beginning as a casual worker before stepping into leadership roles within the oil and gas sector and on multiple power generation sites.
He has worked closely with bid teams and secured multiple contracts with key clients, leading him to progress from superintendent to project manager.
Delivering outages has been one of Roy’s biggest career challenges – and successes – involving managing projects with up to 600 people, including 25 supervisors.
During COVID-19, Roy and his team delivered five outages by implementing staggered shifts and rosters over a longer duration. This ensured safety and operational continuity, demonstrating UGL’s adaptability.
"It was a big challenge, but seeing the team come together and make it work was incredibly rewarding,” said Roy.
Roy has always been passionate about community engagement, with a focus on suicide prevention.
The long-time Rotary member and twice president of the Gladstone Port Curtis Rotary Club, launched the Project We Care where for every safe workday UGL and its client contributed $100 to suicide prevention.
Over four years, more than $80,000 was raised for suicide awareness training for high school students, frontline workers, and community organisations.
"Giving back to the community has always been important to me,” said Roy. “Seeing these initiatives make a difference is one of the most fulfilling parts of my job.”
For Roy, UGL’s greatest strength is the way we support our people to achieve.
"UGL stands behind great ideas and projects, and that’s what makes it such a great place to work.”
