UGL’s Bennetts Green facility near Newcastle, New South Wales, is a unique business specialising in bespoke pressure equipment for the oil, gas, and energy markets. The team delivers turnkey solutions from concept to commissioning for clients across Australia.
For UGL project manager Yanko Serifi, his role is as dynamic as the work itself.
“Even though I’ve been here for five years, there’s a legacy of 28 years of service,” he shares. “What we do here is unique. There are only two or three businesses in all of Australia doing this type of work, and we are the largest.”
With dual responsibilities as a project manager and tendering specialist, his days are filled with variety and innovation.
“I’m involved in the tendering process, oversee manufacturing, and handle every step from design to procurement, legal contracts, and purchasing,” he explains. “It’s a bit of everything.”
The work is far from routine. Nearly every project brings a new challenge.
“Our clients - refineries, power stations, and chemical plants - are always looking to improve efficiency and streamline their processes,” he says. “My role is to figure out how our products can help them achieve that. Currently, we’re working on a 40-tonne heat exchanger for a sulphur reduction project in Geelong, Victoria. Projects like this highlight the level of expertise we bring to the table.”
Yanko is proud to mentor others.
“I’m mentoring a young estimator, teaching him about heat exchangers, materials, suppliers, and legal processes,” he says. “It’s about passing on knowledge to the next generation.”
Outside of work, he is just as passionate about his hobbies.
“I’m an avid angler,” he says. “I love getting out on the boat and chasing fish. I played a role in advocating for life-saving devices called Angel Rings. These life buoys are installed at popular fishing spots to save lives during emergencies.”
When asked what makes UGL special, his answer is immediate: “The people. The team here is incredible. Because our work is bespoke, every job is different and challenging, it’s a rewarding environment.”
