For over two years, Christian O'Donnell has played a pivotal role at UGL as a cyber security engineer within the rail and technology systems (RTS) business. He's driven by a commitment to innovation and has contributed to projects such as the Corridor Intrusion Detection System & Object Detection System (CIDS/ODS) and the Digital Train Radio Systems. His journey is one of continuous learning and dedication to staying ahead in the dynamic and fast evolving world of cyber security.
"The cyber landscape is always changing, which makes it both challenging and exciting," Christian shares. "It's gratifying to know that the work we do plays a vital role in the security and success of our clients. We're not just implementing security measures; we're fostering a culture where everyone understands that security is a collective responsibility."
In his role, Christian designs and aligns security documentation with industry best practices, including compliance for cyber security for operational technology and rail industry standards. His work bridges security assurance with safety assurance, ensuring that both technical and policy controls align with client and regulatory standards. "Managing documentation and aligning security controls from different vendors can be complex, especially on large, multi-year projects," he explains. "It’s a challenge to keep various stakeholders aligned, but it's rewarding to contribute to something so impactful."
Christian credits his manager as a mentor who has been instrumental in his development at UGL. The growing cyber team in RTS has also provided him opportunities to share knowledge and foster a collaborative environment. "Having experienced mentors and a team that embraces learning has been invaluable," he says.
Christian finds fulfillment in UGL’s commitment to its clients and the emphasis on security as an integral part of the design process. "Security isn’t just about technical countermeasures, it’s about creating a mindset shift," he explains. "The focus on developing a security culture within teams is something I value deeply."
Outside of work, Christian has a unique passion for DJing, which initially sparked his interest in technology. "Exploring the tech side of DJing and studying sound labs actually played a role in my love for tech."
