Newton Cheung joined UGL in December 2021 as part of the Communications and Technology Systems group for Rail and Technology Systems (RTS) business. Reflecting on his time at UGL, he shares, "The past three years, I've had the opportunity to work on two major projects: the Corridor Intrusion Detection System (CIDS) and the Obstacle Detection System (ODS) for the Sydney Metro Southwest project from Sydenham to Bankstown. These systems play a critical role in ensuring safe train operations as the corridor transitions to Unattended Train Operations (UTO)."
As a systems engineering manager, Newton oversees the system engineering and system assurance aspects of projects. "My role includes systems engineering and safety assurance, taking into account human factors, security considerations, and the overall design perspective," he explained. "I ensure that our design drawings and reports are submitted on time and meet all requirements."
Newton has played a significant role in supporting the Digital Train Radio Systems (DTRS) project, adding the data packet core that is part of a larger Digital System Program. "This was an exciting project, as it’s the foundational network structure for further upgrades. Implementing this first step, while challenging, was incredibly rewarding," Newton noted.
Newton credits his manager with being a significant influence on his professional growth. "My manager has been incredibly supportive, guiding me not only in my own development but also in how to mentor others. It's a rewarding experience to watch the team grow and mature," he shared.
Outside of work, Newton is an avid fan of National Rugby League and enjoys cheering for the Brisbane Broncos.
For Newton, UGL's strong culture of safety and support stands out. "They always put safety first and truly look after their people. The opportunities for growth, combined with a positive safety culture, makes UGL a fantastic place to be."
