During his five years with UGL, Gabriel Dayeh has developed his career and is currently National Program Manager in our Rail and Technology Systems business. Passionate about problem solving and skilled at complex challenges, Gabriel shares his journey.
Gabriel began his career with UGL with a focus on critical communications for our telecommunications team. His responsibilities included ensuring reliable communication systems for Intelligent Transport Systems and electricity networks. Since then, Gabriel’s role has expanded into new areas, including Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) maintenance and product manufacturing.
“I’ve gone from a telecommunications silo to working across UGL’s various sectors,” says Gabriel. “One of the things I love about UGL is the constant variety and opportunities. It keeps the neurons firing!”
In his current role, Gabriel oversees three teams: the Integra team (which manages SCADA operations for rail and road projects); teams working on communications for clients in transport and the Auburn Manufacturing team which delivers more than 130 unique UGL products. He also plays a crucial role in coaching and developing our people.
“I’ve put three candidates through UGL’s internal Project Management program,” he says. “Helping my team grow into future leaders is incredibly rewarding.”
Reflecting on a standout project, Gabriel recalled a challenging 2020 assignment for Telstra. The project involved constructing a telecommunication base station in a rail corridor on the NSW north coast.
“It was unique, due to the access restrictions,” he says. “We had concrete pumps and a batching truck floating down a river on barges. It was something I’d never done before. What made it phenomenal was the great team. A strong team makes all the difference in a project’s success.”
Outside of UGL, Gabriel is deeply involved in martial arts as an instructor of Judo and traditional Jiu Jitsu.
“I’ve been learning and teaching martial arts for more than four decades,” says Gabriel. “It’s a long journey, and every few years I’m lucky enough to travel to Japan to train with masters to help in that journey.”
Gabriel highlights UGL’s engineering expertise and its caring workplace culture as key reasons for its appeal.
“UGL’s DNA is engineering. We’re an end-to-end solution provider, and the collaboration across divisions is incredible. But what truly makes UGL great is its empathy. Leaders genuinely care about their teams’ wellbeing, and that makes a huge difference.”
