Navigating a dynamic career across multiple roles and locations, Alex Henson’s journey at UGL showcases the diverse opportunities and robust support system within the company.
Tell me about your journey at UGL.
“I have been with UGL for almost six years, commencing in Perth looking after large contracts for mining companies as the business controller for the services division in Western Australia. I also looked after the service division in Adelaide. I enjoyed the opportunity as there are fantastic teams in both locations.
“When the transport business said they wanted a finance person for Canberra Metro Operations (CMO), as stage 1 had just gone live, I moved with my family to Canberra for a couple of years. That was my first foray into public transport. Previously I had been involved in construction work. At the time CMO were a team of 100 employees that included drivers and operational staff. The project is growing as they are currently building stage 2A and moving into stage 2B.
“During my time in Canberra, UGL won the operations of the Adelaide Metro Operations (AMO), so I put up my hand for that and became the finance manager and company secretary for both CMO and AMO. I got to see a lot of Canberra and Adelaide and work with really good people in the two and a half years.
“From there UGL won the contract operations for Auckland One Rail (AOR). I was offered the role of Chief Financial officer of AOR and that’s where I have been ever since.”
Was there a project that you were part of that was a career milestone?
“My first venture into public transport, being CMO, really set a precedent for me. I realised I liked being in the public transport space as a lot of my skills were transferable. With my previous experience in construction the type of contracts and clients we were dealing often had similarities.”
How do you overcome challenges in your role?
“There are plenty of people in UGL who I have worked with at some stage who are willing to open their door to offer help. Being able to tap into different parts of the business is helpful and something I enjoy about UGL. It’s the ability to call up anybody and say, ‘hey I need your help with this’ and they are always willing to help.”
What makes UGL a great company to work for?
“UGL is unique in comparison to a lot of other companies because the teams you work with are really strong - everyone helps out. If you work hard, you are rewarded for that in terms of promotions and travel. The doors really open for you. The progressive and dynamic culture makes UGL different to any other company.”
