Tell me about your journey at UGL
“I started at UGL in the Services Division in Mackay in 1984 as the receptionist back when it was still Goninan. When I joined, I was the only office lady, working with a finance manager, account lead, supervisors, and a manager in the workshops. There was only one computer that we all shared for a few years. Once we received more computers, I progressed to Senior Accounts Assistant and then moved on as a Payroll Officer which I did for about eight years. During this time, I worked closely with our finance manager, understanding our accounts processes. This led to my next role as Finance and Administration Manager for our Queensland mining business which I remained in for 25 years.
“About 4 years ago, Owen Chilmeran, our Head of Finance & Administration for Services, created UGL’s shared service team for finance where my current role is as National Shared Services Manager.
“I look after a team of about 40 people, that provides timesheeting/payroll, goods receipting, expenses and procurement service to many projects in the Services, Projects and Transport Divisions. The shared services teams are located all around the country including Mackay, Gladstone, Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane and a couple of people working onsite at projects. The team works very close together as we all step up to get the job done.
“I have had a really great career path as UGL has provided me with several opportunities to grow which is wonderful. I enjoy coming to work every day! My 40-year anniversary with UGL is in December this year, it’s been quite a journey.”
“Ada is well respected across the business, and always willing to help others. As the shared services manager, Ada expanded the scope of service of her team and proved to be a good business partner to the operational heads, supporting them on their projects. She leads by example and is a true asset to the business.” Owen Chilmeran, UGL Head of Finance.
How are you a mentor to others?
“I have been here a long time, so you pick a few things up along the way. Often people will come to me to ask questions, it’s a big part of my role. I am always here to help direct them to find the answer and assist in any way I can.”
What advice would you give someone who is starting at UGL?
“Learn as much as you can from others who are there to guide you and help with training. If you have the interest and commitment to learn you will go far. There is so much to learn from the diversity of projects UGL is part of, that you will never be bored.”
What is a unique thing about you?
“My background is Dutch. I speak fluent Dutch to my mother every morning who lives in Holland. I recently started line and rock n roll dancing to get some exercise and I absolutely love it. I did a lot of ballroom dancing 50 years ago back in Holland, loved it then and still love it today.”
