New energy
UGL is one of Australia’s leaders of the energy transition. We are providers of renewable energy infrastructure including solar farms and battery delivery. We deliver a full range of engineering, procurement and construction as well as operations and maintenance.
In the new energy business, we work on renewable generation such as solar and wind, firming (battery energy storage systems and gas generation), hydrogen electrolysis and ammonia production.
As a business, we have achieved a lot, and this is just the beginning. We currently have three more utility scale batteries and one solar farm under construction across Australia, with more work in the pipeline.
Core capabilities
Solar
UGL is a major player delivering a full range of engineering design, procurement, construction and operations and maintenance services of solar farms across Australia. We have installed over 800MWp of capacity across 13 solar farms.
Battery
Wind
We are currently involved in several large-scale wind farm balance of plant tenders in joint venture with CIMIC Group sister company, CPB Contractors.
Hydrogen
UGL’s capabilities extend across the hydrogen value chain. We participate in feasibility and front-end engineering design all the way through to construction, delivery and operations and maintenance.
UGL's clients benefit from new energy’s dedicated operations and maintenance (O&M) team. UGL O&M has proven success in managing solar farms on behalf of our clients, delivering services such as:
- site safety, environment, operations and security management
- generation performance management
- generation availability management
- scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs
- compliance with the Generator Connection Agreement, NER and Operating Protocol
- network service provider interaction
- vendor warranty management
- spare parts management
- generation, OpEx and facility reporting
- off-site engineering and management support
- alternative land maintenance options, including sheep grazing.
UGL has successfully completed O&M service contracts for 6 solar farms across Australia, including 2 extended contracts.
Personnel
UGL's O&M team of engineers, supervisors and management is spread throughout Australia, allowing better response across time zones and reducing deployment times.
The team leverages our broader professional expertise within new energy and across the wider business. This allows access to a breadth of knowledge and experience to respond to faults, whilst maintaining efficiencies and without requiring external support.
At UGL, we also have a focus on the local community of each project. Where possible, we champion local employment and provide opportunities to local suppliers.
Operational safety & strategy
The UGL O&M team focuses on the development and alignment of workplace health and safety plans, ensuring relevance to the hazards and risks of each individual site.
We prioritise safe operation with maintenance strategy, ensuring a client’s site generation performance and availability is optimised. Automated monitoring systems, trend analysis, and a long-term data set across multiple sites and assets drives this optimisation.
Our team works closely with local stakeholders, in collaboration with clients to support alternate maintenance strategies, including the use of sheep for ground maintenance and community education centres for training and site tours.
