Metro Trains Melbourne
Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) is a joint venture between UGL, MTR Corporation and John Holland. MTM is the operator of Melbourne’s metropolitan rail network.
As part of MTM, we are responsible for operating and maintaining all assets associated with the network spanning 15 lines, over 200 stations and more than 900km of track.
MTM, through its growing project delivery capability, is making a critical contribution to major works programs that are changing the shape and capacity of the city’s rail network including the Level Crossing Removal Program, Melbourne Metro Rail Tunnel and the line extension to Mernda.
The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Metro Trains Australia (MTA).

MTM has established a state-of-the-art train maintenance facility at Craigieburn, a modern training academy at South Kensington and a passenger experience regime that seeks to make train travel enjoyable and accessible for everyone.
MTM continues to develop practices that improve the operational performance of the railway, underpinned by a strong focus on innovation, creating a better future for rail customers in the city of Melbourne.
Key successes
To promote collaboration and knowledge-sharing among shareholders, employees and stakeholders, MTM has developed many initiatives to strengthen relationships and ensure adherence to best practice:
- MTM, working with Transport for Victoria, Rail Projects Victoria, Public Transport Victoria, VicTrack, V/Line, Yarra Trams and LXRA, has launched the Rail Industry Academy – a body that promotes, develops and governs rail-related training programs and training providers.
- MTM has regular meetings with Industrial Relations Victoria and Union representatives regarding industrial relations matters.
- Key personnel and employees attend leadership forums and symposiums regularly to share knowledge and best practice.
- MTM works with Public Transport Victoria in a Network Development Partnership to identify innovative transport solutions. The partnership is a primary vehicle to spur innovative practices in critical areas that impact on passengers and the wider community.
