When Rizal from AStar Rigging Constructions, a contractor for UGL on the Genex Kidston Connection Project in North Queensland, won a mountain bike in a fundraiser, he chose to pay it forward by donating the bike to the local Greenvale Primary School.
This thoughtful gesture inspired a drawing competition where students illustrated what the Genex project means to their community, with the bike as a prize.
With support from UGL Project Manager, Trevor Noble, a second mountain bike was donated, ensuring prizes for two students. Students from Prep to Grade 6 participated, submitting 17 creative and thoughtful drawings.
The winners were decided in true community spirit by displaying the drawings during a pre-start meeting and allowing team members to cast their votes.
At a recent assembly, Trevor together with Margot Keeley, the project’s finance administrator, proudly presented the bikes to the winners in front of the school community.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the community interaction with principal Shirley Close who assisted throughout the process,” said Margot. “It was also great to again see the parents, whom I have come to know through interactions around town, and the enthusiasm of the kids to draw amazing pictures. Seeing their faces light up when the winners were announced was wonderful! It was a special moment for UGL.”
A huge thank you to AStar Rigging Constructions, Greenvale Primary School, and our very own utilities team for their involvement in this initiative. It’s a heartwarming reminder of how projects like the Genex Kidston Connection bring people together, creating lasting connections and positive impacts to nearby communities.
