UGL’s Defence Fuels contract is a vital operation that spans more than 100 sites across Australia. Our client is the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) Fuel Services Branch. When we are on Defence sites we work with a complex range of Defence and industry stakeholders. Ensuring a collaborative approach and adhering to UGL’s principles is paramount to the successful execution of all our projects.
Recently, UGL’s Stephen Carter demonstrated exceptional commitment to safety at the Defence Fuel Installations (DFIs) located at Robertson Barracks in the Northern Territory. His actions exemplified the company's values and contributed to maintaining a secure working environment.
Stephen had a meeting with an industry contractor engaged by another Defence business group to discuss the scope of work and its proximity to one of the DFIs. The following day, as Stephen conducted his rounds, he noticed that there had been a deviation from the agreed plan.
Recognising the potential dangers, Stephen utilised the Defence Fuel Services Branch "Stop Work Authority" to halt the ongoing work. This initiative allowed the team to reassess the situation and agree on a new methodology for undertaking the work.
Stephen's intervention prevented potentially unsafe work activities that included star pickets being driven into the ground close to an unidentified underground fuel pipe and the commencement of excavation without identifying an underground fuel pipe outside the previously agreed work location.
In acknowledgment of his safety-conscious actions, Stephen Carter was recognised by UGL’s Defence business. This recognition highlights the importance of individual commitment to safety and reinforces UGL's dedication to fostering a culture where employees are empowered to identify and rectify unsafe practices.
