The UGL team has been proudly supporting the delivery of the West Gate Tunnel Project, a critical infrastructure project aimed at enhancing transportation efficiency in Melbourne, Victoria, for two years. Being delivered by fellow CIMIC Group company CPB Contractors in a JV, UGL has played a key role in various mechanical and electrical packages throughout this time, namely the rollout of the projects Intelligent Transport System assets.
Spanning a vast expanse that includes 6.8 kilometres of twin tunnels and 6 kilometres of elevated road, the West Gate Tunnel will deliver a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge, provide quicker and safer journeys, and remove thousands of trucks from residential streets.
“Our teams are hard at work in the tunnel and on the surface. Some of the work that's being undertaken includes the installation of deluge arrange and distribution pipes, smoke duct dampers, and cable containment systems that includes cable ladder, tray and conduit.” Damian Mitchell, UGL Project Director.
From the project's launch, the UGL team has achieved a raft of noteworthy milestones, including:
- 1,500 shop detail drawings produced at Issued for Construction level
- 300,000 metres of cabling across the tunnels and east zone
- 32,000 metres of cable ladders and trays in the tunnels and portals
- 23,000 metres of deluge piping
- 250 high and low voltage distribution assets
- 1,000 lights for roadways and non-roadways
- 425 dampers in the tunnel and portals
- 500 Intelligent Transport System assets.
Damian says he is grateful for the UGL team’s hard work. “The UGL team’s involvement in reaching the two-year milestone is an outstanding achievement. The team size is now more than 300 people and we are well positioned to deliver as we move further into the critical phases of construction and commissioning.”
