Safety is the number one priority at UGL, and Joe Vaz and Mick Sermon are deserving winners of the Very Best Award for safety. Mick and Joe were part of a group tasked with completing maintenance activities at Alcoa Pinjarra. While preparing to complete the work, they identified an adjacent pipe support (not related to their scope) which was seriously cracked and failing. Mick and Joe stopped their job, notified the Alcoa Group Leader, and with Alcoa developed a risk assessment and executed a temporary weld repair. This weld repair to the support mitigated the immediate risk of failure.

The pair not only stopped the job when a safety hazard was identified but contributed to the solution. This was recognised by Alcoa, who awarded Mick and Joe with an Alcoa ‘Stop Coin’ award.
