Dean’s 25 years supporting UGL water projects
In Dean Taylor’s 25-year journey at UGL, he has transitioned from a design draftsman in water treatment to a mechanical estimator, while contributing to pivotal projects around the country.
What has been your journey at UGL?
“I have been with UGL for 25 years, starting out as a design draftsman in water treatment. Then I became the drawing office manager for a time. I then changed direction and moved into estimating where I have been ever since. In my role as mechanical estimator, I am responsible for compilation, review, and submission of estimates, including cost related submission schedules. The role also has the duty of supporting the bid managers and operations for EOI, Tenders and post award pricing.”
What pivotal projects have you been part of?
“In my time I have worked on a number of significant projects all focused on water treatment, they include:
- TasWater Alliance
- TasWater’s Bryn Estyn Water Treatment Plant
- Western Treatment Plant- Melbourne
- Eastern Treatment Plant- Melbourne
- Water Resources Alliance – Melbourne
- Country Water Quality Improvement Program - South Australia
What skills have you gained in your time at UGL?
“I had never worked in water treatment when I started at UGL so learning all the different processes was a great learning curve in the early part of my career. I developed an understanding of water treatment processes and knowledge for bid preparation and estimating. Before I began my career I worked as a motor mechanic. This skill set has helped with a variety of actions about water treatment processes. Experience based learning while you are on the job is the best way I have learnt.”
What makes UGL a great company to work for?
“Being in a large company like UGL you have a wide variety of opportunities so you will always find a role somewhere that will fit your talent. The thing that makes a workplace is the people. I’ve been fortunate to have worked with some truly wonderful people during my time at UGL.”
