Senior Electrical Supervisor Benjamin Maloney, reflects on his 20 year career journey at UGL, highlighting the experiences, friendships, and milestones that have shaped his time with us.
"I’ve been with UGL since 2004. My dad worked for UGL and helped me get a start as a trades assistant on the Stanwell Park priority sewerage program. It was a great job, and after about eight months, they offered me an apprenticeship."
From the early days working on water-based projects to switchyard upgrades at major power stations, Benjamin's career evolved quickly. "The projects involved building switchyards and upgrading power systems to back up the grid if needed. Being part of the entire journey, from conception to finish, has been incredibly fulfilling."
“I became a father in 2013, and my manager, aware of my change in priorities, offered me a role on a project closer to home. That really stood out for me because UGL recognised the importance of work life balance."
Since then, Benjamin has focused on high-voltage rail work, building traction substations across Sydney. "It’s been a great ride over the past 20 years at UGL."
A notable milestone in Benjamin’s career was his work on the Lee Street traction substation in Sydney. "That was the first project where I was a leading hand, the sole electrician. It was really rewarding."
Throughout his career, Benjamin has benefited from supportive mentors and now takes pride in mentoring others. "Russ Andrews, who has since retired, was a great mentor when I started. He always made time for me, which made a big difference."
Now in a leadership role, Benjamin strives to be approachable and supportive. "I keep an open door so anyone can come to me for advice. It’s important to have a good balance between fun and focus. We laugh when we can but get serious when it’s time to deliver safely and on time."
Outside of work, Benjamin enjoys spending time with his family. "I have three young daughters so their hobbies are now my hobbies! But when I get the chance, I love to fish and catch up with my friends."
Benjamin values the diverse opportunities UGL offers. "What makes UGL a great company is the variety. I’ve worked across water, power, utilities, and now rail. It keeps things interesting; I’ve never been limited to one area."
