BHP Billiton Petroleum has exploration, development, production and marketing activities in more than a dozen countries around the globe. The company has a significant position in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico and U.S. onshore, as well as operations in Australia, the United Kingdom, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

BHP Billiton Petroleum operations in Australia make up a significant part of its portfolio currently accounting for more than 35 per cent of produced annual volumes. In 2012, production totalled 80.8 million barrels of oil equivalent (BHP Billiton share) from their operated facilities at Pyrenees, Stybarrow and Minerva in addition to the company’s non-operating interest in the Bass Strait and North West Shelf. The world-class Pyrenees and Stybarrow Floating Production Storage and Off-loading (FPSO) facilities, located in Western Australia, are important components of BHP Billiton Petroleum’s upstream operations producing a significant contribution to the company’s total oil production.

From the late 1980s, UGL has delivered multi-disciplinary project delivery and maintenance solutions to BHP Billiton Petroleum which includes mechanical, electrical and instrumentation, scaffolding, painting, insulation, civil, procurement and planning services.

The Challenge

Over the next 25 years, energy demand in the Asia Pacific region is expected to rise by about 65 per cent. Helping to meet this demand is not only critical to Australia’s economic growth, but is essential for the livelihood of people through the region. With this large demand for energy, BHP Billiton Petroleum is now well positioned to capitalise upon the potential of this projected market growth. BHP Billiton Petroleum has recognised that employing specialist contractors in oil and gas project delivery and maintenance services, enables the company to focus on its core business and long term vision for growth.

The Solution

UGL continues to deliver service excellence throughout the entire lifecycle for a variety of BHP Billiton Petroleum’s operational asset’s with capabilities that cover most aspects of their upstream operations. UGL has adopted a standard set of value added processes to satisfy BHP Billiton Petroleum’s requirements in a safe and cost efficient manner, with clear management and reporting outcomes.

BHP Billiton Petroleum Pyrenees FSPO
In 2012, UGL was engaged by BHP Billiton Petroleum to oversee and manage the upgrade of engine room piping to achieve an American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) vessel endorsement rating for their Pyrenees FPSO.  This included a site survey, drafting, procurement, fabrication, surface treatments (both internal and external), logistics and access requirements for the installation phase. UGL was awarded the installation phase of the project late and therefore accelerated all activities within a small time frame in order for the piping upgrade to be completed prior to the cyclone season.

BHP Billiton Petroleum Minerva Gas Plant
BHP Billiton Petroleum contracted UGL for Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) services for the upgrade of it’s Minerva Gas Plant (Phase 1). This process involved the design, scoping and execution of the Long Term Delivery (LTD), Management of Change (MOC), plant maintenance and software upgrade to the entire plant. The works comprised of the following:

  • Installation of a new transformer, cables and transformer bay
  • Installation works through the plant to allow for future upgrades without shutting the plant
  • Upgrade to the plant software and monitoring
  • Plant electrical maintenance
  • Plant Instrumentation maintenance
  • Commissioning including VLF & Hi Pot Testing
  • Install temporary generators to supply power to plant.

BHP Billiton Petroleum Griffin Venture
UGL has been providing multi-disciplinary engineering, maintenance and shutdown upgrade services to BHP Billiton Petroleum’s offshore Griffin Venture Floating Production and Off-loading (FPSO) facility and maintenance support for the Griffin Venture’s onshore facility at Onslo. UGL also completed the first major maintenance and upgrade shutdown for the FPSO in 1995, nearly two years after the facility commenced service. At the time it was the first project of this type and size undertaken in Western Australia.

BHP Billiton Petroleum Process Skids for Challis and Skua Oil Fields
UGL was contracted to fabricate and assemble a total of fifteen process skids for BHP Billiton Petroleum’s Challis and Skua oil fields. These process skids were required for crude oil conditioning plants on production/storage barges of the Challis and Skua oil fields facilities located in the Timor Sea. The manufacture of these skids included the fabrication of structural base frames, the manufacture of process vessels and their installation together with pumps, valves, interconnecting pipe work and electrical and instrumentation systems.
